Ethiopia, Yirgacheffe - Dumerso G.2 - Organic

Dumerso is a private washing station located north of Yirga Chefe in the Gedeo Zone, renowned for its high-quality Yirgacheffe coffee. Owned by Hirut Berhanu, who transformed the previously dormant station since acquiring it in 2010, Dumerso opened for business in 2013 and employs over 400 workers during harvest, 95% of whom are women. Abenet Alemu, the quality specialist, ensures the renowned coffee quality while fostering community relations.

During harvest, farmers deliver ripe cherries daily, which are processed starting at 6pm. The process includes depulping, underwater fermentation for 36-48 hours, and drying on raised beds for 9-11 days, achieving final moisture levels of 9.5-11.5%.

Dumerso Industrial Trading PLC, founded by Hirut and her sister Mahder in 2014, is now focused on farmer benefits, having achieved organic and Rain Forest Alliance certifications. They are developing a local plant to convert coffee parchment into pressed firewood to increase farmer income, while also providing local electricity, financial loans, healthcare for permanent staff, and accommodations for seasonal workers.
